JUSUN Strike Suspended: A Look at the Current Negotiation Standoff

Nation-wide Judicial Workers' Labor Action Halted

After a tense standoff, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has called off its nationwide strike that began on the 2nd of June, 2025. This decision comes following a series of crucial talks with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, various stakeholders, and other key players.

As per our reports, the communiqué issued after the extended deliberations (between JUSUN and representatives from the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other concerned parties) states that JUSUN agrees to halt the industrial action due to the intervention of the CJN and other stakeholders. The Federal Government has been given a one-month period to address the union's outstanding demands.

The communiqué further highlights that the Federal Government is expected to disburse funds to the Judiciary within this period, with a mandatory clause that JUSUN's demands be implemented immediately upon disbursement. These demands comprise the implementation of the ₦70,000 new minimum wage, settlement of accrued arrears, a 25/35 per cent salary increase, and the payment of five months’ wage award arrears.

JUSUN's members have been instructed to resume work on the 4th of June, 2025, signifying the conclusion of the brief industrial action. The union expressed optimism that all agreements would be honored within the agreed timeframe to avoid future disruptions to the judicial system.

This development indicates a significant step towards resolving long-standing issues affecting judiciary workers, all pending the fulfillment of the agreed-upon conditions by the Federal Government. The future of the judiciary and its workforce remains locked in negotiation as both parties aim for a mutually beneficial resolution.
