NASCAR Racer Suffers Injury after Falling during Victory Celebration at Watkins Glen, Captured on Video
Connor Zilisch's Progress in Recovery After Collarbone Injury
After a successful run at Watkins Glen International, NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader Connor Zilisch sustained a broken left collarbone in a freak accident during Victory Lane celebrations on August 12, 2025.
Zilisch was taken on a backboard to the trackside medical center and then transported to a hospital for further evaluation. During surgery, a plate and screws were inserted to stabilize the bone and facilitate faster healing. The incident occurred after Zilisch fell awkwardly onto the asphalt, apparently getting his left foot caught in the driver's side window netting.
As of August 18, Zilisch and his team at Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s JR Motorsports are carefully assessing his recovery, with no definitive timeline set for his return to racing. Trackhouse Racing’s owner Justin Marks emphasized a collective, cautious approach, considering not only Zilisch’s physical health but also long-term career development and team interests before deciding if he will return for the remainder of the regular season or wait until the playoffs.
The Xfinity Series had an off week after Watkins Glen, with the next race scheduled for August 22 at Daytona International Speedway. While speculation exists that Zilisch could return as early as Daytona or later races, many insiders suggest patience to avoid risking a rushed recovery.
Zilisch himself shared on social media that the surgery and initial days post-injury have been mentally challenging but appreciates fan support. He posted a message of gratitude for the quick attention of the medics and for it not being any worse.
Since his return to racing, Zilisch has posted 11 consecutive top-five finishes and five wins. His crew chief, Mardy Lindley, will continue to lead the team during Zilisch's recovery. The No. 87 Chevrolet that Zilisch had been scheduled to drive in the Cup race at Watkins Glen was withdrawn.
In a statement, JR Motorsports said, "We are hopeful for a speedy recovery for Connor and are working closely with him and his team to ensure he is back in the car when he is ready."
As the racing community waits for Zilisch's return, fans and fellow drivers alike offer their well-wishes and support for the promising young driver.
