Nairobi's coffee auction yields Sh1 billion in sales
In the bustling city of Nairobi, the coffee industry thrived as the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) successfully concluded the 2024/2025 coffee auction season. A total of Sh1 billion was generated from the sale of 14,726 bags of coffee, marking another impressive year for the Kenyan coffee industry.
A total of 15 coffee dealers participated in the auction, including Ibero Kenya, C-Dormans, Taylor Winch, and Louis Dreyfus, among others. The dealers showed a keen interest in the auction, with Ibero Kenya leading the pack by purchasing 4,120 bags of coffee valued at Sh274.8 million. C-Dormans followed closely with 3,750 bags for Sh271.2 million, while Taylor Winch and Louis Dreyfus bought 2,463 bags for Sh1734.1 million and 1,805 bags for Sh1190.1 million, respectively.
In the brokers category, Alliance Berries achieved the highest revenue of Sh350.6 million, followed by New KPCU with Sh211.3 million, CEBBA with Sh50.4 million, and Kirinyaga Slopes with Sh91.8 million. The brokers delivered 1,112 bags of grade AA and 5,297 bags of AB coffee, ensuring a diverse range of quality beans were available for purchase.
The auction saw some remarkable prices, with specialty coffee exporters such as Olam Kenya, Dormans Coffee, and Meru Coffee Mills achieving the highest prices. The Utooni factory, affiliated with the New Mitamboni FCS in Machakos, and the Regeju factory achieved the highest prices for their grade AA coffee, with the Utooni factory achieving Sh69,145 and the Regeju factory achieving Sh68,369.
The Mathioya-based Kangunu factory made history with the best price of Sh 67,852 for each of its 11 grade AA bags. The Mukengeria factory also achieved a high price of Sh 67,981. Another notable mention is the Ruarai coffee factory from Nyeri, which managed Sh68,178.
Peter Gikonyo, a coffee farmer, expressed his satisfaction with the auction, stating that it has registered impressive prices since its start. He also mentioned that the Kangunu factory registered the highest price for the first time, a testament to the quality of their coffee.
As the coffee year 2024/2025 comes to a close, the Nairobi Coffee Auction continues to play a significant role in the Kenyan coffee industry, providing a platform for dealers and brokers to trade quality coffee and ensuring the continued growth and success of the industry.
