Nagelsmann selects Burkardt for his nomination
Jonathan Burkardt Joins German National Team for Nations League Final Four
In a late roster adjustment, striker Jonathan Burkardt of 1. FSV Mainz 05 has been added to the squad of coach Julian Nagelsmann for the UEFA Nations League Final Four. The addition comes due to an ankle injury sustained by midfielder Angelo Stiller of VfB Stuttgart, who was initially part of the team.
Stiller, who missed the Swabians' previous matches due to the same injury, had helped VfB Stuttgart lift the DFB-Pokal following their 4-2 final victory over Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday. Despite his contribution, his injury has hindered his participation in the tournament.
Burkardt, at 24 years old, was the top German scorer in the Bundesliga last season with 18 goals. Previously, there had been some criticism for his omission from the initial squad.
The German team, led by Burkardt, will face Portugal on June 4 in Munich for the semi-final match (21:00 CET/ZDF). Potential opponents in the Final Four (four days later) could be Spain or France. The selection is set to gather in Herzogenaurach for preparations on the following Friday.
