After 20 games without a loss, the DFB youth team's winning streak was shattered in the final of the UEFA U21 Euros against England. However, despite the disappointing loss, coach Antonio Di Salvo lavished praise on the team, highlighting their growth, team spirit, and performance.

Battling back tears, Di Salvo expressed his pride: "I am a damn proud coach of a U21 team that has significantly improved over two years, boasted a fantastic team spirit, played beautiful football, and touched and moved many hearts in Germany."

The final seconds saw drama as Nebel's equalizer hit the crossbar, and Merlin Röhl's shot missed just before the end of extra time. By then, England's substitute Jonathan Rowe had already put the defending champions ahead 3:2.

Asked about the emotional turmoil of the heartbreaking defeat, defender Tim Oermann, future loanee to Sturm Graz, expressed his sorrow: "It's incredibly empty. It was an insane ride, and that's why it's just so disappointing."

Reflecting on the U21 Euros

Looking back at the competition with some perspective, Oermann said, "What a fantastic time that was, what a team that was." He hopes that everyone will take something away for their career - "the importance of team spirit."

Di Salvo echoed Oermann's sentiments, noting that the young national players could benefit significantly from their experiences with the U21 team. Despite the group stage exit in 2023, this edition of the U21 team had brought immense joy. The coach explained that the U21 players could take a lot with them on their journey to becoming A national players. "But then, small things can determine whether you make the big breakthrough or not," Di Salvo said, as he reflected on the hard-fought tournament. His contract runs until after the next UEFA U21 Euros in Albania and Serbia. The new U21 build-up begins in September.

The Woltemade year only managed a second-place finish, but this doesn't diminish the promise of the young talents linked to Nagelsmann for Germany’s U21 team.

Potential Leading Players

Nick Woltemade of VfB Stuttgart has gained attention with his goal-scoring prowess. Woltemade led the scoring charts during Germany's U21 Euros campaign, scoring four goals in the tournament. His impressive form continued in the Bundesliga, where he netted 12 goals in his debut season for Stuttgart. This earned him a senior team debut shortly after the U21 Euros.

Tim Kleindienst of Borussia Mönchengladbach is another forward valued by Nagelsmann. Kleindienst scored 16 Bundesliga goals in his second top-flight season and had previously netted 12 goals for Heidenheim, signaling his potential as a promising attacking option.

Rocco Reitz of Borussia Mönchengladbach also stands out as a promising midfield talent. The young midfielder, under contract until 2028 with a €20 million release clause, has caught the eye of Nagelsmann and the scouts, suggesting he is firmly on the radar for Germany’s youth teams.

Other talents like Max Rosenfelder (SC Freiburg) and Ismaël Doukouré (yet to be specified) have also caught the interest of Nagelsmann’s scouts, signaling a focus on strengthening the defensive options for Germany’s youth teams.

Nelson Weiper of Mainz had a strong showing in the U21 European Championship, highlighting his potential for future consideration in the national team [1][2].

Community aid could be provided to help the young soccer talents, such as Nick Woltemade, Tim Kleindienst, Rocco Reitz, Max Rosenfelder, and Ismaël Doukouré, as they continue their vocational training in sports, particularly football, under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann. After their intensive training, these players could undergo sports-analysis to assess their growth and development towards becoming professional footballers.
