Nagano Governor Abe Prepares to Lead the National Association of Governors
Shuichi Abe, the current governor of Nagano Prefecture, has been elected as the new head of Japan's National Governors' Association. Abe, 64 years old, will officially begin his two-year term as president of the association on September 3, 2025.
Abe's background in public service stretches back to 1984 when he joined the Ministry of Home Affairs (now the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications). Before his first election as Nagano governor in 2010, he served as vice governor of the prefecture. He also currently serves as a vice president of the National Governors' Association.
Abe's election as the head of the association marks a historic moment for Nagano Prefecture, as he is the first governor from the prefecture to hold this position. His election was endorsed by 15 of Japan's 47 governors.
Abe's tenure as Nagano governor has been marked by sustained trust and political stability, as evidenced by his reelection for four terms. His elevation to the national role as head of the governors' association highlights his recognition among peers across Japan.
In a statement, Abe expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges Japan faces through local government wisdom and stable leadership amidst national political uncertainty.
The National Governors' Association of Japan is composed of 47 governors from various regions of Japan. The appointment of Abe as the head of the association will take place at a meeting on August 26.
