NA Chairman supports dynamic future of Cần Thơ following merger
Rewritten Article:
CầN THƠ - During a gathering on April 26 with distinguished Mothers of the Revolution, along with former officials from central agencies, Military Region 9, CầN THƠ, and HậU GIANG Province, National Assembly (NA) Chairman Trân Thanh Mãn expressed his support for the development of the Mekong Delta, particularly in CầN THƠ City.
This meeting, held on the occasion of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975-2025), set an inspiring tone as Mãn shared insights on Vietnam's path to success over the past 40 years.
With a US$476 billion economy, per capita income nearing $4,700, and state budget revenues reaching VNĐ2 quadrillion ($76.8 billion), Vietnam's growth is evident. Today, the country boasts diplomatic ties with nearly 200 nations and stands among the world's 40 largest economies, ranking 32nd in the global nation brand rankings.
Looking ahead, Mãn shared Việt Nam's aspirations to become an upper-middle-income developing country by 2030, marking the Communist Party of Việt Nam's centennial, and a high-income developed nation by 2045 - the country's 100th anniversary. For 2025, Việt Nam aims for at least 8% economic growth, setting the stage for double-digit growth from 2026 to 2030.
At the heart of this vision lies a sweeping administrative overhaul, targeting increased efficiency by reducing the number of provinces and centrally-run cities from the current 63 to 28 and six, respectively.
Several cities are eyed for restructuring, including CầN THƠ, which will merge with HậU GIANG and SÓC TRĂNG Provinces, forming a dynamic economic hub spanning 6,400 sq.km and serving over 4 million residents.
As the country prepares for a new era, the NA's upcoming 9th session will pass amendments to the Constitution. If approved, district-level administrative units will be dissolved by June 30. This change will be accompanied by an extensive review of the merger of commune-level administrative units, with a goal to reduce the current 10,035 communes by 60-70%.
This restructuring represents an unprecedented organizational revolution, and chairman Mãn called upon the collective support of the Mothers of the Revolution and former leaders in aiding this transformative policy for the nation's progress.
The Chairman also emphasized preparations for Party congresses at all levels this year, leading up to the 14th National Party Congress in January 2026. Additionally, preparations are underway for the election of deputies to the 16th NA and People's Councils for the 2026-2031 term, scheduled for March 15, 2026.
City Party Secretary Dồ Thanh Bình expressed CầN THƠ's commitment to upholding revolutionary traditions, fostering unity, and excelling in political tasks to reinforce CầN THƠ's regional standing.
Earlier that day, Chairman Mãn paid a visit to Hero of the People's Armed Forces and former CầN THƠ special force member Nguyễn Thị Vân, along with former Deputy Chief of the Staff of Military Region 9 and former CầN THƠ special force member Ung Thị Bé in Ninh Kiều District.
