Mysterious green glow and blackout strike Astana during snowstorm

A strange green glow lit up the night sky over Astana on March 5, 2026. The unusual sight left residents puzzled, while a major power outage struck parts of the city at the same time. Videos of the eerie phenomenon quickly spread online, sparking both curiosity and concern.

The event began at 7:54 p.m. local time, when a severe snowstorm hit the city. High winds and heavy snow caused a technical failure in a 10 kV overhead power line. The resulting fault disrupted electricity supply to residential areas, including streets like Zhidel, Akniyet, and Ushkopir in the Zarechny settlement.

As the power grid malfunctioned, a bright green flash appeared in the sky. The glow was visible across Astana and recorded by multiple onlookers. Social media soon filled with reactions—some users joked about alien activity, while others expressed alarm over the unexplained light.

Authorities later confirmed the two incidents were linked. The green hue resulted from the electrical fault, made worse by the storm's extreme weather conditions.

The power outage and green glow were traced to the same technical failure. Repairs to the damaged power line were prioritised to restore electricity to affected homes. Officials advised residents to stay indoors during the storm as crews worked to resolve the issue.
