Mysterious Apparitions, Swamp-Dwellers, and Hidden Riches in Norfolk Broads

The Norfolk Broads in East England, designated as one of the UK's 15 National Parks, features a network of seven rivers and over sixty waterways known as Broads. Dating back to the medieval era, these waterways were initially created from peat extraction, which led to flooding, eventually forming the Broads by the 14th century.

Historically, the Broads served as popular boating destinations, and today, they provide the largest protected wetland in Britain (Broads Authority, 2025). Strangely enough, the region is also known for its spooky legends and spectres, some of which are attached to the Broads themselves.

One such story is that of The Potter Heigham Drummer. In this tale, a ghostly drummer boy is said to haunt the River Thurne in Potter Heigham. The drummer was rumored to be part of a clandestine relationship with a wealthy local's daughter. Their romance did not go unnoticed by the girl's father, who disapproved of their union. Tragically, the drummer boy met his end when he fell through icy waters on the River Thurne. His ghost is said to still skate on the river every year or, in some accounts, to warn people about the dangers of thin ice (Westwood, 2005).

Another spine-tingling legend associated with the Broads is that of Ranworth Broad's infamous monk, Brother Pacificus. In the 1530s, Brother Pacificus rowed from St Benets Abbey to St Helen's Church in Ranworth to work on repairing a rood screen. Horrified by the slaughter of his fellow monks during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, Brother Pacificus remained at the deserted Abbey. After his death, his ghost reportedly rows across the Broad to the church in the early morning, with a ghostly dog still sitting in the bow (Herbert Woods, 2025).

One more chilling tale comes from Callow Pit. The story tells of two treasure hunters who attempted to steal an iron chest full of gold at the bottom of the pit. The chest was meant to be guarded by the Devil, as the two men found out when they were seized by a hand and arm from the water. It is said that the chest still lies at the bottom of the pit today (EGR, 1855).

Several other eerie stories, including encounters with the phantom drummer, ghostly monks, and mysterious lantern men, have been reported in and around the Broads. Visitors to the area often find themselves captivated by these haunting tales, adding an air of mystery and allure to the already enchanting Norfolk Broads.
