Second Flood in Myawady Township, Kayin State:

Myawady Township in Kayin State faced a second flood in late July 2025, caused by heavy monsoon rainfall and the rising water levels of the Thaungyin River. The river rose more than half a foot above the danger level and was predicted to rise another 4 feet within a day.

Impact:

The flood had a significant impact on the region, affecting over 131,000 people across Myanmar's flood-hit regions, including Kayin State. Flood alerts remained active for the Thaungyin River in Myawady Township, indicating ongoing risk and displacement. Tens of thousands faced urgent shortages of clean drinking water and humanitarian aid due to the flooding.

Relief Efforts:

In response to the crisis, flood relief teams established emergency rescue camps in monasteries within Myawady for displaced residents. Multiple local rescue teams and organizations, including the Red Cross Society, Myanmar Rescue, and various community rescue groups, provided support. Hotlines were issued for emergency contact.

Temporary Shelters:

Emergency rescue camps were set up primarily in several monasteries around Myawady to accommodate evacuees affected by the second flood. These monasteries include Dhamma Yan Aung Dhammayon, Dhitthanaung Dhammayon, Heman Oo Monastery, Taura Monastery, Kyakhattaw Monastery, Phar Chauk Kaung Monastery, and Weipula Monastery. Over 3,000 displaced people are currently taking refuge at these monasteries.

Ongoing Crisis:

The situation remains critical due to ongoing monsoon rains and rising river levels in early August 2025. Residents near Khon Sar Win, Pulae Road, Moke Kot Market in Ward (3), Basic Education High School No. 2, School Street in Ward (2), and the lowland area near Tharyarpin Gate have been affected by the flood. A resident near Moke Kot School in Ward (3) had to move their belongings upstairs due to the flood.

The Disaster Management Committee is guiding the setting up of temporary shelters at several monasteries to accommodate the displaced residents. The Myawady District Administrator is leading relief efforts, including food, shelter, and healthcare support. The committee is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the displaced people during this challenging time.
