A 17-year-old girl from Pendang found herself in hot water after riding her motorcycle against traffic on the North-South Expressway, an incident that occurred near the Hutan Kampung Toll Plaza on July 4. The girl, who surrendered herself at the Kota Setar District Traffic Police Station at around 9pm on Sunday, has been under investigation for reckless and dangerous driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1988 in Malaysia.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with the video of the incident going viral online and sparking various reactions from social media users. According to Siti Nor Salawati, a police officer, the teenager will be brought to the Alor Setar Magistrates' Court for a remand application to assist with investigations.

Under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1988, the penalties for reckless and dangerous driving include imprisonment for up to five years, a minimum fine of RM5,000 or more, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period not less than five years. These penalties were notably applied in a recent high-profile case where a bus driver faced charges for reckless and dangerous driving, in addition to other serious driving offences.

If convicted, the offender could face up to five years in prison and a fine ranging from RM5,000 to RM15,000. The motorcycle believed to have been used during the incident has been seized by police for further investigation.

It was reported that the girl told police she was following her mobile navigation app at the time of the incident. The incident took place on July 4, and it has since been shared on Facebook, further increasing its reach and impact.

The law imposes a stringent combination of imprisonment, financial penalty, and licence disqualification to deter dangerous driving behavior under this provision. The authorities are reminding motorists to always exercise caution and responsibility when driving to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road.
