Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, aims to up its game with a massive $1 billion investment from investors. According to SEC filings, this capital boost will help xAI create AI tools that aid humanity's quest for knowledge and understanding. The news comes in response to the widespread popularity of ChatGPT, a chatbot from OpenAI, which has set the tech world abuzz.
Musk, known for his scrutiny of AI and its associated risks, sees the need for state regulation to ensure safety. He recently likened AI to a "genie in a bottle," capable of fulfilling our every wish, but with the potential for catastrophic consequences. In a twist of irony, Musk founded OpenAI in 2015, but later parted ways due to disagreements over company control. These days, he criticizes ChatGPT as tainted by "wokeness," a term originally referring to racial awareness, but now used derogatorily by some as an anti-progressive slur.
To compete with ChatGPT, xAI developed Chrome and Grok, two chatbots. The former uses deep learning models and is designed for specific tasks, while the latter is known for its sarcastic wit and real-time data access from Musk's social media platform X. Elon Musk famously quipped, "I wonder who steered it in that direction," in reference to Grok's sarcastic demeanor.
The xAI team's latest project, Grok 3, boasts a host of advanced features, such as DeepSearch Mode, Think Mode, Image Generation, and File and Image Processing. DeepSearch Mode provides a reasoning interface, revealing how the chatbot interprets queries and constructs responses. Think Mode engages multi-step reasoning, breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces, assessing solutions, and fine-tuning outputs. Grok 3's Image Generation feature lets users generate images based on text prompts. Furthermore, users can upload files and images for processing through the app.
Grok 3's compute power is said to exceed that of its predecessor by over ten times, outperforming other AI models in areas like mathematics, science, and coding. Elon Musk himself described the upgraded chatbot as "scary smart." Given the escalating AI arms race, only time will tell which company gains the edge.
