Elon Musk, the world's richest individual with an estimated net worth of $400 billion, has found himself at odds with current US President Donald Trump. Musk voiced his disapproval of Trump's latest tax and spending bill, calling it a "disgusting abomination." He even warned Congress members who supported it, "In November next year, we will fire all politicians who have betrayed the American people."

Next year, the midterm elections are scheduled to take place in early November 2026, where all members of the House of Representatives, and approximately one-third of Senators, will face the voters. For these Congress members, Musk's words aren't just hot air; he contributed over $250 million to Trump's campaign last year. Musk's vast fortune means he can easily donate significant sums to political campaigns.

The proposed budget plan, which Trump calls the "great beautiful law," narrowly passed the House of Representatives in May, but various members of Trump's Republican Party in the Senate are blocking it. They object to the planned increase in the debt ceiling and seek steeper spending cuts. Trump is currently trying to secure cooperation from skeptical Republican senators, but Musk's interference complicates these efforts. Musk's involvement in the relationship between the president and Congress is markedly more active than usual, and the president frequently threatens to support opponents of wayward Congress members in the next election.

At first, the White House downplayed Musk's criticism. However, after his warning to Congress members, there's a sense that Trump may reconsider.

Musk's dissatisfaction with the law was initially held back with more reserved language, expressing disappointment that a committee led by him was not effective in pushing for spending cuts. He also shared his unease about criticizing government decisions on CBS, stating, "I'm in a bit of a pickle, but I can't take it anymore."

Musk's criticism resonated with notoriously left-wing Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Musk's assessment. Sanders pointed out that the super-rich received $664 billion in tax breaks while $290 billion was cut from food assistance for the needy.

Musk's disengagement from Washington was initially attributed to a rule limiting the terms of outside government contractors to 130 days a year. However, recent reports suggest that Musk has been losing power struggles with several Trump cabinet members, and the president has even quit the candidate for the leadership of the space agency NASA, who was close to Musk, from contention.

  1. Despite Musk's significant contributions to Donald Trump's campaign, the tech mogul has publicly expressed his disapproval of the tax and spending bill, labeling it a "disgusting abomination."
  2. As the midterm elections approach, Musk's opposition to the bill and his willingness to use his political donations as leverage could influence the political landscape, particularly in relation to policy and legislation, such as the proposed directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation within war-and-conflicts and crime-and-justice sectors.
  3. The ongoing political feud between Musk and Trump, set against the backdrop of Washington, may have wider ramifications, not only for the United States' policy-and-legislation but also for general-news, given Musk's recent proposal for a new political party, "The America Party."
