David Byrne, the legendary former Talking Heads frontman, has announced his engagement to Mala Gaonkar, a US entrepreneur. The news was shared during an interview about Byrne's upcoming album, "Who Is The Sky?", which is set to release on September 5.
Byrne and Gaonkar have been living together in New York for several years, though the exact start date of their relationship remains undisclosed. The couple has been seen publicly as a couple for some time, and their creative partnership precedes their engagement.
In 2016, they collaborated on an immersive theater performance for the Stanford Arts Institute. More recently, they worked together on a theatrical experience in Denver, Colorado in 2022.
One of the songs on the upcoming album, "Moisturizing Thing", is inspired by Byrne's fiancée who often moisturizes his face. The song explores the topic of people judging each other based on appearance.
Prior to his relationship with Gaonkar, Byrne was married to artist and designer Adelle Lutz from 1987 until their divorce in 2004. They share an adult daughter named Malu. Gaonkar was previously married to German businessman Oliver Haarmann and has two sons.
Haarmann is reportedly the new partner of Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon.
Byrne and Gaonkar have been spotted together at various events, including the 2023 Oscars. The interview about Byrne's upcoming album was conducted by The Times.
This is Byrne's second marriage, and Gaonkar's second as well. The engagement was announced on the sidelines of the interview.
