Grohl Secures a New Rhythmic Talent for His Band - Musician Dave Grohl seeks a new drummer.
In a surprising turn of events, Ilan Rubin, the accomplished drummer known for his work with Nine Inch Nails (NIN), has joined Foo Fighters as their new drummer. This follows the departure of Josh Freese, who is now returning to his previous role in Nine Inch Nails.
Ilan Rubin, who is now 36 years old, has a significant history with Nine Inch Nails. He initially joined the band in 2008 and continued until 2009. After a brief hiatus, he re-joined in 2013 and remained until his recent departure to join Foo Fighters in 2025. Notably, Rubin is the youngest living musician to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an honour he received in 2020 at the age of 32, for his work with Nine Inch Nails.
Rubin's musical portfolio extends beyond Nine Inch Nails and Foo Fighters. He has worked with bands like Paramore, Angels & Airwaves, and The New Regime, and collaborated with artists such as Danny Elfman and blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge.
Foo Fighters, fronted by Dave Grohl (56), have been in search of a new drummer since the unfortunate death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. It is currently unclear if Rubin will join the band as a permanent member or just as a touring drummer.
Meanwhile, Josh Freese, who is 52 years old, left Foo Fighters in May after nearly two years. His departure was initially for family reasons, as he had done in the past when he left Nine Inch Nails. Nine Inch Nails promptly confirmed Freese's return on social media, following the news of Rubin's departure.
Foo Fighters have concerts scheduled in various locations, including Jakarta, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, and Mexico City, in October and November. Nine Inch Nails' "Peel it Back" North American tour is set to start next week, with most arena dates already sold out.
