Musician Carrie Underwood reminisces on cherished moments shared with the late songwriter Brett James.
In a heartfelt tribute, country music superstar Carrie Underwood announced the passing of her long-time collaborator, Brett James. The tragic news came on September 18, as James lost his life in a plane crash in Macon County, near Franklin, North Carolina.
James, who was 57 years old, was a Grammy-winning songwriter and a man of strong faith, as Underwood fondly recalled in her emotional Instagram post. She described him as a devoted believer, expressing that he loved the Lord.
Underwood and James shared a unique bond, having co-written some of her most iconic songs, including the Grammy-winning 'Jesus, Take the Wheel'. This powerful ballad, co-written with Hillary Lindsey, has become a staple in Underwood's repertoire, and she shared that she will never sing one note of it without thinking of James.
Underwood's favorite songs to perform that they created together are those about Jesus, due to the sincerity and purity of the thoughts and feelings behind them. Another one of their collaborations, 'Cowboy Casanova', showcases James' versatility as a songwriter. Underwood recalled that a sassy girl anthem like this should have sounded ridiculous coming from James, but he made it cool.
In her tribute, Underwood fondly remembered hearing James sing 'Cowboy Casanova' and praised him for his generosity and humility. She noted that he insisted on splitting the songwriting credit with her, a testament to his character.
Underwood's Instagram post included three pictures of her and James captured over the years, a poignant reminder of their shared history. She expressed her love for James and her belief that she will see him again someday.
James' passing has left a void that Underwood fears won't ever go away. In her tribute, she emphasized that he was the epitome of 'cool' and will be deeply missed.
