Musician and renowned composer Lalo Schifrin, known for his contributions to jazz music, departed this world in the year 2025.

Lalo Schifrin, the celebrated Argentine-American composer, pianist, arranger, and conductor, has passed away at the age of 93 in Los Angeles. Schifrin was best known for his work in blending jazz, classical, and Latin American musical elements, and for composing the iconic theme tune for the 1966 US television series "Mission: Impossible."

Schifrin's career was **prolific and diverse**, extending far beyond the "Mission: Impossible" theme. He composed scores for numerous films, including "Cool Hand Luke" (1967), "Bullitt" (1968), "Dirty Harry" series, "Enter the Dragon" (1973), "The Amityville Horror" (1979), and the "Rush Hour" trilogy (1998–2007). He also created memorable TV themes, such as "Mannix" (1967), "Blue Light" (1966), "T.H.E. Cat" (1966-67), "The Big Valley" (1968-69), "Medical Center" (1969-76), "Planet of the Apes" (1974), and "Petrocelli" (1974).

Schifrin's collaboration with legendary jazz figures, including Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Jimmy Smith, and Cal Tjader, was a key aspect of his career. He arranged several jazz albums for Verve Records and earned Grammy nominations and wins in the jazz category.

Throughout his career, Schifrin won **five Grammy Awards** and was nominated for **six Academy Awards** and several Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. He also composed the Paramount Pictures fanfare used from 1976 to 2004. In 2019, he was honoured with an Honorary Academy Award acknowledging his vast contributions to film music.

Schifrin's scores were noted for their rhythmic daring, urban edge, and blending of jazz improvisation with traditional orchestral music, which helped modernize film and TV music during a period dominated by lush romantic orchestration. His compositions, including the "Mission: Impossible" theme, are considered among the most distinctive in screen history.

Schifrin's wife, Donna, survives him, along with his three children from his two marriages. Tom Cruise, star of the spin-off Hollywood franchise, told Schifrin that his composition was the reason he took the role in the 1996 film.

In a career spanning over six decades, Lalo Schifrin left an indelible mark on American film and television scoring, and his influence can still be felt in contemporary music. His legacy as a versatile, innovative composer will continue to inspire future generations.

Lalo Schifrin's career extended beyond the "Mission: Impossible" theme into various realms of entertainment, composing scores for movies such as 'Cool Hand Luke' and 'Dirty Harry' series, and TV shows like 'Mannix' and 'Planet of the Apes', showcasing his love for movie-and-tv and music. His work also incorporated memorable themes and earned him five Grammy Awards, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.
