Musical artist Toni Krahl is embarking on a fresh start
On September 19, 2023, Toni Krahl, former frontman of the iconic East German band City, will embark on a new chapter of his music career with the release of his debut solo album, "Genauso war's."
Krahl composed almost all the pieces on the album, with the lyrics penned by Alfred Roesler-Kleint. The album exudes optimism at many points and instills courage, encouraging listeners not to give up and find hope, as seen in the song "Never say never."
City, a band Krahl was a part of for more than half his life, was founded in East Berlin in 1972. The band celebrated great successes even after the fall of the Berlin Wall, both in East and West Germany. However, the remaining members decided to end the band at the end of 2022, 50 years after its founding.
The album "Genauso war's" consists of 17 new titles, including "Am Morgen danach" and a cover of a Bob Dylan song titled "Who has a beard like snow and frost? Who gets wish mail at the North Pole?" This Christmas song will be a bonus track on the album.
Krahl's solo album is very personal and deals with a variety of heavy, melancholic, and light topics. One such track is "Abschied," originally written by Krahl as music for his funeral. The song features a deep, almost unrecognizable voice, reminiscent of Johnny Cash's last album.
After leaving City, Krahl sang as a guest singer with the band Silly for two years. Now, he is collaborating with The KINX from Prenzlauer Berg on his solo career.
A Germany tour is planned for Krahl, starting on November 22, 2023, in Freiberg, Saxony. Fans can expect to hear many titles of his old band City during his solo tour, as well as songs from his new album.
City's farewell concert in Berlin was attended by 10,000 fans, marking the end of an era for the band. However, with the release of "Genauso war's," Krahl is looking forward to a new beginning. Despite the sadness of losing his bandmates Fritz Puppel, who died unexpectedly in 2024, and drummer Klaus Selmke, who died of cancer in May 2020, Krahl maintains a sense of humor and often enjoys playing jokes.
As Krahl embarks on his solo career, fans can expect a mix of old and new, melancholy and optimism, and a touch of humor in his music. The album "Genauso war's" is sure to be a must-listen for fans of Toni Krahl and City alike.
