Music Festival Osnabrück 2025 - An auditory adventure exploring sonic landscapes and cultural roots
The Morgenland Festival Osnabrück 2025 is set to return, promising an extraordinary 14-day journey of music, culture, and artistic exploration from June 29 to July 11. This year's festival, themed around change, will be a testament to the power of music in bridging cultures and fostering understanding.
The festival will kick off with a powerful opening performance by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, featuring Yo-Yo Ma, Kayhan Kalhor, and Alan Gilbert. The opening performance will showcase Kayhan Kalhor's new double concerto titled "Venus in the Mirror."
Throughout the festival, a diverse lineup of international artists will take centre stage. Highlights include the Iranian kamancha virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor, the Montreal-based setar master Kiya Tabassian, and U.S.-based percussionist Behrouz Jamali. Other notable performers include Dawn of Midi, Johnny Gandelsman, Brooklyn Rider, Issam Rafea, Asya Fateyeva, François Rabbath, Layale Chaker, Dinuk Wijeratne, Christine Zayed, Tarek Yamani, the Cello Octet Amsterdam, Karen Ouzounian, Lembit Beecher, Nai Barghouti, Jake Charkey, Kinan Azmeh, and Shabnam Parvaresh.
The festival offers a rich framework program, including workshops, artist talks, and participatory formats, providing audiences with unique opportunities to engage with the artists and their music.
One of the festival's highlights will be an extraordinary concert on July 11, featuring Rami Khalife and Francesco Tristano in a choreographed interplay of sound, space, and movement.
Moreover, Syrian oud virtuoso Issam Rafea and saxophonist Asya Fateyeva will perform in a special duo, while French-Syrian double bassist François Rabbath, a living legend, will be featured in conversation with Kinan Azmeh and in a musical performance.
The Morgenland Festival Osnabrück 2025 is a collaborative effort, supported by the City of Osnabrück, Lower Saxony Foundation, Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation, Sparkasse Osnabrück Foundation, Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, NDR Music Promotion in Lower Saxony, Osnabrücker Land Landscape Association e.V., and Sievert SE.
This year's festival is curated by the Syrian-American clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh, who will be passing the baton to the Tehran-born clarinetist Shabnam Parvaresh, marking a transition in artistic leadership.
