Musetti storms into Top 5 after epic Rublev battle in Hong Kong

Lorenzo Musetti has reached the final of the Hong Kong Bank of China Tennis Open. His victory over Andrey Rublev in a gruelling three-set match guarantees him a spot in the ATP world rankings' Top 5.

Musetti defeated Rublev with a final score of 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 after 2 hours and 45 minutes of play. This win secures his place in the tournament’s final, where he was set to face the winner of the second semifinal between Marcos Giron and Alexander Bublik.

The tournament, an ATP 250 hard-court event with a prize pool of $700,045, has since been cancelled. As a result, no final match will take place, and Musetti will not compete for the title. His performance earns him 4,105 ranking points, pushing him into the Top 5. This achievement makes him the third Italian in the computer-ranked era to reach this milestone, following Adriano Panatta and Jannik Sinner. For the first time since 1973, Italy will now have two players—Musetti and Sinner—ranked in the world’s Top 5 simultaneously.

Musetti’s semifinal victory ensures his rise to the Top 5, marking a historic moment for Italian tennis. The cancellation of the tournament means no final will be played, but his ranking boost remains confirmed.
