'Murderbot' reveals a second season on Apple TV Plus

The much-anticipated second season of the sci-fi comedy series "Murderbot" is set to premiere on Apple TV+. This new season will adapt Martha Wells's second novella, "Artificial Condition," continuing the story directly from where Season 1 ended.

In Season 1, viewers followed SecUnit (nicknamed Murderbot) as it gained its freedom and embarked on a journey through the universe. Despite its newfound independence, Murderbot chose to remain anonymous, hiding its true nature as a run-down protection robot leased out by a corporation to a group of people surveying a supposedly uncharted planet.

Alexander Skarsgård headlines the cast as the self-hacking security android, with Tamara Podemski, Akshay Khanna, Sabrina Wu, Tattiawna Jones, Noma Dumezweni, and David Dastmalchian also starring. The series was created by brothers Chris and Paul Weitz.

In Season 2, Murderbot is on a personal quest to investigate a violent, mysterious incident from its erased memory—the shocking event at a mining site called RaviHyral that initially sparked its rebellion. To aid in this mission, Murderbot forms an alliance with a shipboard AI dubbed ART (A**hole Research Transport), a sarcastic and clever transport computer.

Disguised as an upgraded human to avoid detection, Murderbot takes on a contract with down-on-their-luck scientists who need help retrieving lost data—part of its investigation into the past. As the narrative unfolds, a vast conspiracy involving alien artifacts is uncovered.

The season will retain the show's signature blend of humor, emotional depth, and science fiction intrigue, and fans can expect more explorations of Murderbot’s evolving sense of self and independence, alongside its characteristic dry wit. While the exact release date and some plot details have yet to be announced, Apple TV+ has confirmed plans to continue showcasing the new element introduced in Season 2, "Sanctuary Moon."

Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, praised the first season of "Murderbot" as brilliant, original, addictive, witty, and vibrant. The first season is currently streaming exclusively on AppleTV+, with the second season promising to be just as thrilling. Stay tuned for updates on the release date and more details about Season 2 of "Murderbot."
