Who hasn't fantasized about the ultimate New Year's Eve bash on a luxury yacht? Champagne and caviar in spades, surrounded by your inner circle of friends. But when those friends become adversaries, only one thing matters: survival - in the harshest sense.

When the English party, it often descends into chaos: Alcohol flows like rivers, inhibitions dissolve as easily as some partygoers' clothes, and good taste is tossed overboard as quickly as last year's trends. Videos from Mallorca or recordings of London Christmas parties serve as proof - this isn't just hearsay.

Sarah Goodwin decided to tackle the topic head-on. "The Yacht" is a story you'll find hard to shake off.

Hannah has a grand party in mind, too: She drives her clunker for twelve hours after her shift to meet her best friend Libby and her husband Olly on their brand-new luxury yacht in Ventimiglia. It's all about high life and pleasure on New Year's Eve? It's going to be fantastic! Hannah is absolutely thrilled to catch up with her oldest and best friend again. Also on board, apart from Hannah, are her other friends Maggie and her husband Leon, plus Harry. Hannah once had a brief fling with Harry before cold feet set in about a serious relationship.

Unlike her friends, however, Hannah doesn't belong to the wealthy elite: Olly hails from aristocratic roots, Libby inherits her wealth, Leon is a top podcaster, and Maggie designs luxury fashion. Hannah once dreamed of joining their ranks, but she never quite found her footing - always living day by day and treading water.

When Friends Betray

Unlike her friends, who are already well into their drunken stupor when Hannah arrives, Hannah plans to leave the yacht and the ostentatious luxury lifestyle of her companions early on New Year's morning. When she overhears a conversation between Libby and Olly, she realizes her plan won't work: the yacht is nowhere near the harbor. It's in the midst of the Mediterranean Sea. Hannah screams the inebriated zombies back to consciousness after the New Year's bash. But the situation doesn't improve - on the contrary: One lie follows another, one shocking truth replaces another still more disturbing one: Olly can't steer the yacht, it doesn't belong to him, the tanks are empty, the radio equipment is faulty, and the helicopter is nothing more than a fraud.

The Storm is Brewing

Olly is bankrupt, his marriage to Libby is a sham, Leon is a thug, and Maggie has more than just an eating disorder. Only Harry seems reasonably sane: he's tech-savvy, a talented artist who creates sculptures from scrap metal, and tries to keep calm on board. A breath of fresh air for Hannah's frayed nerves. But then the yacht gets caught in a violent storm - and Libby suddenly disappears. A blood-stain on her cabin wall hints at something terrible. Is there a murderer on board the luxury ship? Who is it? What's the motive? Who will be the next victim?

The Last One Standing

So much can be revealed: the reader or listener of Sarah Goodwin's "The Yacht," published by Lübbe and Lübbe Audio, isn't it. The plot is too suspenseful on the one hand, and has twists aplenty on board to make you queasy. Hannah, the story's sympathetic character, is quickly identified. Disgust for Leon and Olly grows with every passing minute of the nearly ten-hour audiobook. Their misogyny sets a pulse that can't be healthy in the long term. But perhaps they'll finally face the consequences?

Warning: Spoiler Alert! The yacht sinks, becomes a victim of the waves and weather. Even one or two partygoers meet their end with the fish. Because who parties hard and forgets about tomorrow, after all, leaving the lifeboats in the harbor (you'd rather save space for the dance floor)? The panic on board, which is now escalating exponentially, leads to accusations, curses, violence, and, ultimately, survival of the fittest. This is all skillfully orchestrated by Demet Fey, who can handle loud action as well as the soft, desperate tones. "The Yacht" is a first-class listening experience. The subtitle is telling: "Who will survive when the truth comes to light?"
