Trial Resumes for Man Accused of Death Threats Against Daughter

A man, now 45, faces trial once more on Tuesday in Augsburg at 9 a.m., charged with issuing threats against his own teenage daughter. His 24-year-old brother is also in the dock. The siblings allegedly mistreated the girl since around her 12th birthday, due in part to her relationship with a friend. Both are in custody.

At a family court hearing in the daughter's presence, grim discussions about her demise surfaced. Now 17, she ultimately sought refuge at the youth welfare office and was relocated secretly by authorities.

According to the public prosecutor, the accused belonged to the Yazidi faith at the time. The family saw the daughter's relationship, due to it being with an non-Yazidi, as gravely dishonoring their religion and family. Yazidis are native to Iraq, Turkey, Syria, or Iran and have traditions that only permit relationships within their religious community.

Though initially sentenced to three years and eight months in prison each, the dad and his brother appealed, leading to this retrial in Augsburg's regional court.

During the family court hearing, the discussion about the daughter's potential execution was reportedly tied to their religious beliefs, as the defendants were adherents of Yazidi faith during the time. Despite charges and convictions, they perceived her relationship with an outsider as such a severe offense that warranted such drastic measures.

Insights: The enrichment data, unfortunately, does not reveal any recent trials involving these specific individuals or charges. However, honor killings and acts that target relationships outside of religious communities are common concerns in various societies, including within some Yazidi communities.
