Standing against Women's Violence: Municipalities Take a Stance
In the spirit of the International Day against Violence against Women, municipalities across Lower Saxony made their stance clear this past weekend, with numerous orangish displays. The town of Braunschweig, for instance, saw 113 pairs of shoes symbolically laid out on an orange canvas on Schlossplatz square, each pair representing a woman who lost her life at the hands of her partner or ex-partner in Germany in 2021. LED boards and landmarks throughout the city were scheduled to glow orange on Orange Day.
The city's Equal Opportunities Department pointed out that women's violence, particularly intimate partner violence, has often been treated as a trivial matter in the past. "This perception has evolved over the years through extensive awareness-raising efforts," they shared. As a result, dates like November 25, International Day against Violence against Women, hold significant importance as a global annual reminder.
Many other cities, including Emden, Bremen, Osnabrück, Göttingen, Lüneburg, Delmenhorst, and the Hanover region, were also planning related campaigns.
According to the German Social Association in Lower Saxony, a staggering one in three women in Germany has experienced physical or sexualized violence in her lifetime. Among women with disabilities, this rate nearly doubles.
Police crime statistics revealed that 24,742 cases of intimate partner violence were reported in Lower Saxony in 2022, as reported by the Lower Saxony Criminal Police Office (LKA). A significant 70% of the victims were women in these cases, with the majority dealing with bodily harm, sexual offenses, and stalking.
