In the politically charged landscape of Turkey, the legal case involving Istanbul Municipality has become a significant point of contention. This issue, which has been a focus of attention for several months, was recently addressed by Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Bahceli, an ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, urged for a swift conclusion to the legal cases targeting opposition-run municipalities. He emphasized the need for "justice to come to full fruition" once the judiciary's summer recess ends, suggesting that ongoing investigations and trials should be completed quickly.

The investigation into Istanbul Municipality, governed by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), has led to the detention of many officials, including the prominent figure of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the former mayor of Istanbul. Istanbul's current mayor, İmamoğlu, faces corruption and terrorism-related charges, which have sparked mass protests in Turkey. His case has been highlighted as a symbol of the erosion of judicial independence.

The investigations began in October 2024 with the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and have expanded to include several districts across Istanbul and other provinces. Recent detentions include Inan Guney, mayor of Istanbul's Beyoglu district, along with other officials.

The legal cases involving mayors from the CHP are numerous, with at least 17 mayors detained, including those from major cities like Istanbul, Adana, Antalya, and Adıyaman. Charges include bribery, extortion, and bid rigging, which authorities claim are part of a corruption crackdown.

There is also an ongoing investigation into an alleged plot to assassinate a businessman who cooperated with prosecutors, revealing corruption in opposition-run municipalities. This involves a former Istanbul official and a lawyer accused of relaying an assassination order.

These legal cases are part of a broader crackdown on opposition municipalities, which critics view as politically motivated to weaken the CHP. The actions have led to significant street protests and concerns about judicial independence and democratic norms in Turkey.

Bahceli's statement was a written assessment of current events in Turkey, emphasizing the need for justice to be fully served in the country. His call for the resolution of these cases is a reflection of the urgent need to address every issue that weakens Turkey's morale, motivation, and maneuverability.
