Which problems remain after the main line closure - Munich’s S-Bahn chaos: Weekend closures and WWII bomb checks disrupt travel
Munich's S-Bahn network, operated by Deutsche Bahn's infrastructure subsidiary DB InfraGO, is currently experiencing significant disruptions due to ongoing construction work and inspections. The entire inner-city route of the S2 line is affected by a closure lasting from Saturday, November 15, to Monday, November 17. This closure is for track and deep-cable maintenance, as well as crucial subsurface inspections for potential unexploded World War II ordnance at Ostbahnhof.
The S2 line is the only one operating along the entire inner-city route during this period, but passengers should anticipate delays on the main line due to follow-up inspections and a currently investigated signal fault. Similar disruptions are expected on weekends following the autumn holidays.
The recent closures were part of the construction for Munich's second main S-Bahn line, requiring the shutdown of the western section of the inner-city route for several days. Munich's S-Bahn network has largely resumed regular service after nearly ten days of disruptions. However, restrictions will return on the first and second weekends of Advent, with initial restrictions potentially starting as early as Friday, November 14, at 10:20 PM, affecting other S-Bahn lines.
Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, with alternative options including replacement buses and the underground (U-Bahn) for transfers into central Munich. DB InfraGO continues to work diligently to minimize disruptions and ensure the safety and reliability of the S-Bahn network.
