Munich scraps city center plans.
In the wake of a devastating incident on February 13th that took two lives and injured 39 others, the city of Munich has made the heart-wrenching decision to cancel all carnival events scheduled from 'Crazy Thursday' (February 27th) to 'Rose Monday' (March 4th), originally meant to take place at the Viktualienmarkt and the Marienplatz. The city's much-anticipated 'Daminchen' parade has also been scrapped.
In a joint statement, the Market Hall and the Department of Municipal Affairs expressed their unthinkable distress at celebrating carnival unabated on the Viktualienmarkt following this tragic event, which claimed the life of a city administration staff member alongside her young daughter, and affected numerous colleagues physically and psychologically.
What Does the City Say?
The city officials' statement poignantly conveyed their profound sense of sorrow and shock, acknowledging the immense pain that has befallen the city's family. They requested understanding and sympathy from all those eagerly anticipating carnival festivities.
While carnival processions could, theoretically, have been held, the city believed it would be inappropriate to celebrate in a carefree manner given the circumstances. Acknowledging the hardship this decision would impose on those who had put so much effort into preparing for the canceled events, the city sought to show its empathy, unity, and resilience in the face of adversity.

- "Given the recent tragedy in Munich, which affected not only the community but the city administration as well, it is apparent that the city prefers to reconsider politics and general-news, putting the focus on healing instead of celebration, as they cancel the carnival events."
- "Amidst the cancellation of carnival events, the city officials are also addressing crime-and-justice matters, as they emphasize their empathy towards those affected, encouraging understanding and unity, and vowing to support those who have been preparing for the canceled events."
