Munich Hosts Eurovision Song Contest 2026: Prominent Figure Mounts the Stage

Following Austria's triumph at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, several cities are vying to host the 2026 event. After JJ's win, Vienna emerges as the front-runner, with the city expressing readiness to host the European stage once more.

Eurovision Song Contest 2026: Vienna takes the lead

Following a historical victory at the Eurovision, Austria is poised to host the 2026 event. Vienna, which previously hosted the competition in 2015 after Conchita Wurst's victory, is the favored contender. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPO) expressed the city's readiness, while 2025 winner JJ expressed his preference for a Vienna-hosted event.

Other Cities in the Running

While Vienna appears to be the frontrunner, the race is not over yet. Other cities expressing interest in hosting the event include Innsbruck, Graz, St. Pölten, Wels (where a new exhibition hall is scheduled to open in March 2026), and even the small town of Oberwart.

However, a shortlist of up to three cities will be announced in June 2025, with the final decision set for July 2025. The final selection will depend on which cities best meet the Eurovision requirements such as suitable venues, infrastructure, airport access, hotel capacity, and financing.

Graz, Innsbruck, and Joint Bids also in Contention

Graz and Innsbruck have also expressed interest in hosting the event. Graz Mayor Elke Kahr suggested the city has the appropriate infrastructure and know-how to handle large-scale events. Innsbruck could leveraged its mountain backdrop and corresponding locations as selling points.

A joint bid from Wels and Linz is also on the table, with Wels' new Messe arena expected to be ready by March 2026. Oberwart, a small town with a population of 8,000, has also expressed interest, despite reported weaknesses such as location, airport connection, and accommodation capacities.

Klaus Leutgeb's Ambitious Proposal

Klaus Leutgeb, a man known for large-scale events, has also entered the race. He operates the Schwarzl leisure center near Graz and is eyeing the Schwarzl as a potential venue, hoping to attract 30,000 to 40,000 spectators with an open-air public viewing similar to Basel's setup.

According to sources, the event could take place on 16th May 2026, with semifinals scheduled two or four days before. However, other May dates are also possible, and the final decision is yet to be made.

Several cities offer promising prospects, but Vienna remains the most likely host due to its established infrastructure, past hosting experience, and readiness to welcome the European stage once more. The official decision, however, will be made in July 2025, following the evaluation of each city's compliance with Eurovision requirements.
