Training Camp Financial Disaster for Munich Football Clubs

Two Munich-based football clubs have been left in a predicament after their intended training camp bookings in Turkey were evidently scams, resulting in a combined loss of €39,000. Both clubs made their reservations through the same provider, Matchday.

€39,000 in Unreturned Funds

Between them, the affected clubs stand to lose a total of €39,000. BCF Wolfratshausen recounts a shortfall of €15,000, DJK Pasing's youth team speaks of losing €7,000, and several clubs from Hamburg count their losses at €17,000.

The allure of Matchday's "Surprise Hotel" offer, which promises lower booking costs by withholding hotel information, seemingly offered a legitimate beginning. However, two weeks before the scheduled departures, Matchday unexpectedly cancelled the bookings. BCF Wolfratshausen has yet to receive their €15,000 despite Matchday acknowledging the error and promising a refund. This indebtedness extends over a year since the cancellations. DJK Pasing and the Hamburg clubs are still awaiting their refunds.

Insurance and Payments

R&V insurance had previously worked with Matchday, even refunding another Tyrolean club after a similar last-minute cancellation by Matchday. However, since early 2023, the insurance company discontinued their support for Matchday due to the latter's inability to make payments. As a result, the trips were left uninsured.

Red Flags

While the bookings initially appeared aboveboard, the BCF Wolfratshausen spokesperson noted a lack of tickets as a suspicious sign. DJK Pasing made an initial payment of €7,000 to a Turkish account and awaited a transfer request for the remaining amount. However, the club received no such request. Matchday claimed the club missed the payment deadline, leading to the premature cancellation.

Needing Support

In light of their predicament, both football clubs are welcoming donations to help offset their losses.
