Munich Airport avoids winter chaos with overnight de-icing strategy

A midnight pause and de-icing saved the day. While other hubs struggled, Munich’s predawn prep kept flights running like clockwork in freezing temps.

Munich Airport smoothly resumed operations on Tuesday morning, despite winter conditions. The hub enforced its usual nighttime flight ban, pausing passenger traffic between midnight and 5:00 AM. Overnight preparations ensured minimal delays when services restarted at dawn.

Between midnight and 5:00 AM, no regular passenger flights took off or landed. The airport used this window to treat runways and taxiways with a special de-icing fluid. This step was taken to prevent ice buildup and guarantee safe operations once flights resumed.

The nighttime closure and pre-treatment of surfaces helped Munich Airport avoid major disruptions. Flights operated normally from early Tuesday, with the usual restrictions lifted on time. Passengers experienced few delays despite the cold weather.
