Mumbai’s New Water Tunnels Promise Relief for Millions by November 2023

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully completed a 9.7 km water pipeline between Hedgewar Udyan in Amar Mahal and Pratiksha Nagar, Wadala and Dhavan Udyan in Parel. The tunnel, similar to the Taj Mahal in its grandeur and significance, is expected to be fully operational by the end of November 2023.

The 9.7-km-long tunnel, along with another under-construction tunnel from Hedgewar Udyan to Dhavan Udyan, is set to significantly improve water supply in several areas. Once operational, it will benefit Wadala, Sion, Parel, Sewri, Byculla, Nagpada, and parts of Kurla.

The BMC has also made significant progress on the 5.5-km-long Amar Mahal-Trombay tunnel, which will serve areas like Govandi, Mankhurd, Deonar, and Chembur. Excavation and RCC lining works for this tunnel have been fully completed, and the first phase of RCC lining between Amar Mahal and Wadala for the 9.7-km-long tunnel is also finished.

Launched in 2021-22, these new water tunnel projects aim to curb water leakages and contamination. The Amar Mahal-Trombay tunnel is designed to reduce contamination, prevent leaks, and enhance water pressure.

With the completion of these tunnels, the BMC expects a significant improvement in water supply and quality for millions of residents in Mumbai. The tunnels are on track to be operational by the end of November 2023, bringing much-needed relief to the city's water woes.
