Heat Waves: Warming Up the East Coast
From the Poconos to the Jersey Shore, extreme heat is no joke. After those heavy winds during last week's storm, thousands of PECO customers in the Philly area are still without power, sweating through the dangerous heat without AC or fans. 😓
Dr. Jennifer Trivedi, a professor at the University of Delaware's Disaster Research Center, warns that with temperatures forecast to top 100 degrees this week and high humidity making the heat even more dangerous, it increases the risk of people getting sick from heat. 😵🏥
As of Monday, PECO reported that over 11,000 customers were affected by outages, but they're hoping to restore service to all by 11 pm. In the meantime, they're encouraging affected households to utilize cooling centers available in Philly and Montco.
The ongoing heat waves on the East Coast, including the Delaware Bay, are thought to be a result of climate change, which is a growing concern in the field of environmental science. Dr. Jennifer Trivedi, a professor at the University of Delaware, emphasizes that the combination of soaring temperatures and high humidity, expected this week, can lead to increased health risks such as heat stroke.
