During a wild and stormy night, emergency services in the Paderborn district were left battling numerous incidents, following a ferocious storm that hit the region.

The storm, which brought heavy rain, powerful winds, and hail, took place on June 14-15, 2025, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The storm, which originated in the southwest and moved across North Rhine-Westphalia, saw particularly severe impacts strike the town of Paderborn and its surrounding areas.

As a result, hundreds of incidents were reported, with the police alone responding to over a hundred calls for help within just two hours, according to a spokesperson. Shortly after midnight, the fire department spoke of around 180 incidents. However, it's likely that this number may have been much higher.

The emergency services were dispatched to deal with flooded cellars, upturned manhole covers, and flooded underpasses. The storm also led to power outages in homes, and cars were left stranded on flooded roads. Luckily, there were no initial reports of injuries.

The city center of Paderborn and the town of Bad Wünnenberg to the south were particularly affected by the storm.

Key Highlights:

  • The storm system that struck the Paderborn district was severe and intense, causing widespread destruction.
  • Many incidents were reported, with the police responding to over 100 calls and the fire department dealing with around 180 incidents.

  • Despite the severe damage, there were no reported injuries according to a police spokesperson.

Insights:

The storm brought on significant property and infrastructure damage. The roof of the Media Print factory in Paderborn partially collapsed due to the accumulation of water, damaging the sprinkler system and causing disruptions in the production area. Other areas throughout the district suffered damage too, with the extent of the destruction still being assessed.

Firefighters were deployed quickly to tackle the flooded streets and basements, working to pump out water and secure affected structures. Police and other emergency services handled multiple situations, including flooding and structural damage.
