Multitudes in Altschauerberg Protesting Against the "Dragon Monarch"
The small town of Emskirchen, Middle Franconia, Germany, recently played host to a Schanzenfest, a gathering that has become associated with the ongoing conflict between the German YouTuber Rainer Winkler, known as Drachenlord, and his critics.
Despite the peaceful nature of this year's event, the Schanzenfest has a troubled history. The gatherings, which often attract large crowds, have been a source of disturbances and incidents at Drachenlord's former residence in Altschauerberg. Previous offenses included property damage, bodily harm, and police interventions multiple times a day.
This year, the police were prepared, with numerous forces, a mounted unit, and a support command present. Despite initial difficulties in enforcing a general decree issued by the market of Emskirchen, prohibiting larger gatherings, noise, and fireworks in Emskirchen and Schauerberg districts, by late afternoon, most people had left or were on their way, according to a police spokesperson.
Approximately 4,000 people gathered in Emskirchen for this year's Schanzenfest, with some within the town itself. The police spokesperson expects the crowd to disperse during the evening and will continue to monitor the situation.
The conflict between Drachenlord and his opponents, often referred to as haters, stems from years of online harassment and confrontations. Drachenlord's presence on YouTube drew significant negative attention, which evolved into coordinated visits by detractors to his hometown, intended to provoke or document confrontations.
In a bid to mitigate the situation, efforts include digital literacy campaigns, enhanced social media moderation, and stricter legal actions to curb harassment. Drachenlord himself was sentenced to a one-year suspended sentence by the Regional Court of Nuremberg-Fürth in 2022.
It's important to note that Drachenlord has since sold the house and moved away from Altschauerberg. The house, which was the epicentre of previous Schanzenfests, has been demolished.
Incidents at this year's Schanzenfest included an insult to an officer, an act of resistance, and the setting off of pyrotechnics in a wooded area. However, no one was in the affected street where the police were present.
Social media calls prompted attendees to travel to Emskirchen by car and train. A 20-year-old individual destroyed the window of a hunting hut and injured himself severely.
The Schanzenfest in Emskirchen remains a complex case of internet fame turning into real-life social conflict, highlighting the need for continued efforts to address online harassment and its potential real-world consequences.
