A Street-Lined Mourning: The Aftermath of the Israel-Iran Conflict

Multitudes express grief over slain high-ranking Iranian military officials and scientists following Israeli attacks

In the heart of Tehran, grief permeated the air as thousands gathered for a somber procession on a Saturday in June. The occasion? The funerals of high-ranking officials from the Revolutionary Guard, as well as nuclear scientists, who lost their lives during a heated 12-day conflict with Israel.

The frozen city bore witness as the caskets of the fallen were transported down Azadi Street on trucks, each containing the remains of military commanders, scientists, and researchers who had been instrumental in Iran’s nuclear program. Among the deceased were Gen. Hossein Salami, the head of the Revolutionary Guard, and Gen. Amir Ali Hajjizadeh, the mastermind behind the Guard’s ballistic missile program.

The conflict, starting with a swift Israeli campaign, targeted the elimination of Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The aggression resulted in the loss of around 30 Iranian commanders and 11 nuclear scientists, as well as extensive damage to eight nuclear-related facilities and over 720 military infrastructure sites. As a result, more than 1,000 people, including 417 civilians, lost their lives, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA).

Iran responded to the attacks with more than 550 ballistic missiles, causing damage and claiming the lives of 28 civilians in Israel. In total, approximately 974 people met their end during this 12-day war, with thousands more injured.

The capital, normally bustling with activity, fell silent as the mourners lined the streets, paying their respects during the first public funerals for top commanders since the ceasefire. Iranian state television announced that the ceremonies honored 60 people, including women and children.

In an effort to memorialize those who had given their lives, the Iranian government shut down government offices, allowing public servants to attend the somber processions.

There is an ongoing dispute about the purpose of Iran’s nuclear program, with Israel viewing it as an existential threat. The military campaign waged by Israel was a desperate move to prevent Iran from assembling an atomic weapon. Despite the ceasefire, tensions are still high, fueled by further attempts to attack each other. The conflict has left deep scars, and it remains to be seen when, or if, a semblance of peace will return.
