Multitudes Detained Amidst Ongoing Mayhem Following Paris Saint-Germain's Champion League Victory
Paris, baby! The city of lights witnessed a wild celebration after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed the Champions League title with a 5-0 victory over Inter Milan. But things took a darker turn as the night progressed, with violence, clashes, and arrests becoming a grim reality.
Laurent Nuñez, the Paris police prefect, revealed that a staggering 79 people were arrested in Paris as chaos persisted throughout the city, disrupting PSG's celebrations. Nuñez shared that, following the match, over 100,000 fans welcomed the players back to Paris, and it was this exuberant crowd that eventually led to a second night of disorderly incidents.
As night fell, groups of troublemakers gathered near the PSG stadium and along the Champs-Élysées avenue, causing mayhem. Some of these individuals used makeshift barriers to block the ring road for at least 15 minutes before being dispersed by the police. Other mischief-makers set off fireworks and vandalized local shops, with at least four or maybe five establishments looted.
The police force, with over 5,400 officers on duty in Paris, struggled to contain the crowds due to the immense scale of unrest and the heightened emotions surrounding the historic victory. The violence continued well into the early hours of Monday, with calm finally restored by 3:30 am.
PSG had earlier put on a grand open-top bus parade for their ecstatic fans, giving them a chance to celebrate their Champions League triumph. Although celebrations were largely peaceful, the night saw violent altercations and fatalities in some areas. Tragically, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the western city of Dax during a PSG street party, and a man in his 20s was killed when his scooter was struck by a car during the celebrations.
Street parties and football victories are usually a time for happiness and unity. However, in this case, the euphoria was overshadowed by widespread violence and lawlessness, leaving the city of lights to deal with the aftermath.
