Got a bone to pick with the Turkish government? So do hundreds of Berliners! Last week, an estimated 1,300 folks marched through the streets of Berlin, voicing their opposition to recent events in Turkey. The demonstration was organized by the CHP Bund in Berlin, the city's chapter of the largest Turkish opposition party. The protest was a direct response to the detention of Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu.

The rally commenced at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, making its way towards the Adenauerplatz. Along the route, participants loudly protested the current state of affairs in Turkey. Signs read, "Together for a democratic Turkey" and "We want our democracy back." The event was reminiscent of a similar gathering that took place the very same day as Imamoglu's detention last Wednesday, where approximately 200 individuals gathered to protest in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

Who's this Imamoglu fella, you ask? Well, he's a CHP politician suspected to be a strong contender against the ruling president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in future elections. According to Turkey’s Ministry of Interior, he was "temporarily" removed from his position as Istanbul's mayor due to corruption and terrorism investigations. Imamoglu vehemently denies all allegations.
