The spokesperson from the fire department explained that several individuals had hurled themselves off the stands, leading to their injuries, and numerous scuffles ensued, further intensifying the chaos. Altogether, medical personnel treated 44 patients.
The unprecedented number of casualties necessitated the presence of around 65 first responders and ambulances parked outside the stadium.
The Pitch Turns into a Battleground
HSV had clinched a highly-anticipated slot in the Bundesliga once again with their 6:1 victory over SSV Ulm, a feat they hadn't accomplished in seven years. Amid the raw emotions, some fans could not contain their excitement and invaded the pitch a few minutes before the final whistle, tipping advertising structures and creating mayhem. When the game finally ended, the throng of fans was impossible to contain—the police had to prevent them from besieging the locker room area.
As Bild newspaper reported, elated fans demolished the promotion goal, snipping the net and dismantling the structure into component parts. Fragments of the playing field were also swiped, apparently a customary practice during such celebrations, although this remains a troubling aspect of their post-victory traditions.
Emergency services had their plates full during the weekend due to a flurry of events. Alongside the HSV promotion celebration, citizens were commemorating the 836th Hamburg Port Anniversary, and Schlager sensation Roland Kaiser took the stage at the Barclays Arena nearby.
