"Multitude of anti-Trump demonstrators gather in London during President Trump's visit, with signs indicating their disapproval"
In the heart of London, a significant demonstration against the second state visit of former U.S. President Donald Trump is underway. The protest, organised by the Stop Trump Coalition, began at Portland Place and is making its way towards Whitehall.
The coalition, comprising over 50 unions and charities, includes climate activists, anti-racism, and pro-Palestine campaigners. Comedian Nish Kumar, who attended a rally in Parliament Square, urged protesters to come together against Trump's visit.
Zack Polanski from the Green Party criticised the pomp and ceremony of Trump's second state visit, and called on Labour leader Keir Starmer to take a more prominent role in the protests, standing "front and center outside Downing Street."
Tara Heinemann, a demonstrator outside Windsor Castle, expressed her disgust at Trump's visit. She held a sign that read, "No banquets for fascists" and "Trump turning 2025 into 1984." Heinemann also voiced her belief that Trump is incredibly dangerous and should not be anywhere near power.
Heinemann also criticised the royal family for hosting Trump, saying they should not spread his beliefs in the country. This sentiment was shared by former Labour MP Zara Sultana, who attended the anti-Trump protest and referred to far-right marchers.
The Metropolitan Police has estimated that around 5,000 people have joined the march so far. To manage the protest, they have deployed around 1,600 officers, including 500 from other forces.
The protest has attracted international right-wing figures such as Dutch MP Thierry Baudet, former German politician Gudrun Burwitz, and American white nationalist Richard Spencer. This has raised concerns among some protesters, with Nish Kumar expressing his concern about a protest led by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, stating that it puts the UK in an incredibly scary position.
A spokesperson for the Stop Trump Coalition stated that a government that bows down to Trump and racism opens the door to fascism. The coalition's message is clear: no to racism, no to Trump, and stop arming Israel. As the protest continues, it serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing discourse surrounding Trump's political legacy and its impact on global politics.
