Multiple voting records surpassed in Vienna's ballot polls

Vienna's election on Sunday saw several records being shattered, with the FPÖ recording its biggest-ever increase since the 2020 election, following a 23.7% loss.

Multiple voting records surpassed in Vienna's ballot polls

On Sunday, the political landscape in Vienna underwent a remarkable transformation. The FPÖ, following its record loss in 2020 (-23.7%), engineered a staggering comeback, achieving its all-time high increase of 13.3 percentage points. This monumental victory surpassed their previous record of +12.8% in 1991.

The ÖVP, conversely, faced a crushing defeat, registering a new record loss of -10.7 percentage points (previously -10.35 in 1991). Meanwhile, the liberals, represented by NEOS, celebrated a remarkable milestone with a result of 10% (previously 7.5%), marking their largest gain ever in Vienna.

The SPÖ struggled, edging close to its negative record of 39.15% (1996), managing to secure 39.4% of the vote. Despite this, the party fell below the coveted 40% mark, a level it had surpassed five years ago (with 41.6%). The SPÖ’s loss of 2.2 points was far from its record loss of 8.7 percentage points in 1996.

Green party has a near miss

With a record result of 14.8% in 2020, the Greens had a steep bar to clear. While they almost achieved their target with a result of 14.5%, it remained short of their previous high.

As the tally of postal votes continues, the final positions of the ÖVP, NEOS, and the Greens are yet to be determined. Whether the ÖVP will maintain its 2020 second place or slump further, potentially ending up in fourth or fifth position, remains uncertain.

Looking ahead to the 2025 election, the FPÖ's meteoric rise and the ÖVP's collapse could reshape coalition dynamics significantly, potentially disrupting traditional alliances and elevating the far-right to the second-largest force. The fallout from these dramatic shifts will surely be a topic of intense debate in the coming months.

  • The Green party narrowly missed surpassing their previous high recorded in 2020, managing 14.5% but falling short of the 14.8% they achieved last year.
  • Vienna's political landscape could undergo radical changes in the next election, as the FPÖ's remarkable increase of 13.3 percentage points and the ÖVP's collapse could reshape coalition dynamics, potentially elevating the far-right as the second-largest force.
  • While NEOS saw a significant increase in their voting share, from 7.5% in 2020 to 10% in the recent elections, their position compared to the ÖVP and the Greens is still unclear, with the tally of postal votes ongoing.
  • The events in Vienna's general news have demonstrated an interesting turn in the city's political landscape, as established parties like the ÖVP and SPÖ face setbacks, while the FPÖ and NEOS experience increases in policy-and-legislation, politics, and general-news coverage.
In the Vienna elections held on Sunday, the FPÖ surpassed all expectations, setting a new record for the party with its largest-ever gain, significantly reversing its 2020 loss (-23.7).
