Celebrations for Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) historic Champions League win turned chaotic as incidents erupted during the parade and after the trophy presentation, leading to numerous arrests and chaos in the French capital.
The Champs-Élysées parade, attended by over 100,000 fans, and the trophy presentation at the Parc des Princes stadium resulted in a series of unfortunate events. Paris police chief, Laurent Nunez, shared his disappointment over the renewed incidents, stating, "We regret the incidents following the parade that gathered more than 100,000 people on the Champs-Élysées and the subsequent trophy presentation at the Parc des Princes" on RTL radio.
Despite the swift intervention of the police, troublemakers managed to create disturbances. Barriers were flung onto the city's ring road in the early hours of Monday, causing a quarter-hour blockade, and groups on the Champs-Élysées set off fireworks and made attempts to vandalize shops, according to the police chief. Notably, those arrested were not genuine PSG fans.
The nationwide celebrations over the prior night resulted in an astounding 563 arrests, with 491 of them taking place in Paris, and 323 individuals held in police custody. Given that most of those arrested were involved in looting stores, the majority were expected to remain in detention.
A story of a more peaceful celebration unfolded as PSG continued their victorious celebrations, attending the French Open with no property or personal damage reported. Ousmane Dembélé carried the trophy onto the Philippe Chatrier court before the quarterfinal match, while PSG boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi cheered enthusiastically on the tribune alongside French tennis legend Yannick Noah. More than 10,000 spectators welcomed the team warmly.
