In the midst of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, several nations have decided to send their embassy staff packing from Tehran. Countries like Australia, the UK, and Switzerland, made the announcement on a Friday, citing the unstable and increasingly dangerous situation.
The UK Foreign Office stated, "In view of the current security situation, we have taken the precautionary measure to temporarily withdraw our British staff from Iran." The embassy will still continue to operate remotely.
Switzerland's Foreign Ministry, too, decided to close their embassy in Tehran, emphasizing the intensified military operations in Iran and the undeniably unstable circumstances. They assured the safety of their diplomatic staff, who have left Iranian territory, and expressed their intention to return once the situation permits. Due to the lack of diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran, Switzerland serves as a protective power for American interests in Iran.
Australia also made the decision to withdraw their embassy staff and their families from Iran, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong mentioning that this wasn't a hasty decision but a necessary one based on the deteriorating security situation in Iran. Bulgaria, New Zealand, Portugal, and the Czech Republic have also temporarily shut down their embassies.
Israel initiated a significant attack on Iran last week, targeting primarily nuclear facilities and military installations within the country. Since then, Iran has retaliated by launching rockets and drones against Israel. President Trump of the United States is currently scrutinizing the possibility of a military strike against Iran within the next two weeks.
