Brawls and Jumps Mar Hamilton-Burger's Return to Bundesliga
Last weekend witnessed chaos at the Volksparkstadion as thousands of exhilarated supporters flooded the pitch following Hamburg-Burger SV's (HSV) triumphant return to the German top-tier league, the Bundesliga, after a seven-year hiatus. The celebration took a turn for the worse, resulting in over two dozen people being injured.
One fan, unfortunately, faced life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital, as per the Hamburg Fire Department's account. Nineteen others were admitted to hospitals with significant injuries, while five attended to with minor injuries. The majority of these injuries were due to fans diving from the stands or skirmishes erupting during the pandemonium. In total, emergency medical services provided treatment to a staggering 44 patients.
To manage the calamity, around 65 responders, including firefighters, and a dozen ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
The Pitch Turns into a Battlefield
HSV's thrilling 6-1 victory over SSV Ulm had electrified the 57,000-strong crowd at the Volksparkstadion. Minutes before the final whistle, some enthusiastic fans spilled onto the pitch, trampling advertising boards as they celebrated, only to become unstoppable thereafter. The police stepped in to obstruct the rabid fans from storming the locker rooms when the madness showed no signs of abating.
Reports suggest that the fans successfully dismantled the promotion goal, tearing out the net and pulverizing the frame into fragments. Some memorabilia from the pitch was also purloined, although such acts are typically viewed as an accepted part of these jubilant celebrations.
The emergency services were kept on their toes as they navigated this chaotic weekend, juggling the HSV promotion alongside the 836th Hamburg Port Anniversary festivities and a performance by Schlager star Roland Kaiser at the Barclays Arena.
