Multiple fatalities reported following a vehicle crash at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, Canada

On April 27, a tragic incident occurred at the annual Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver, resulting in at least nine deaths. The incident happened at East 43rd Avenue and Fraser in the south of the city.

The festival, which celebrates Filipino culture and commemorates Lapu-Lapu, a national hero who resisted Spanish colonization, has been a significant event in the city since its official establishment in 2023. The tragedy deeply affected the Filipino community and the city as a whole.

The suspect in the incident has been taken into custody by the Vancouver Police Department. However, no new suspects or arrests have been mentioned. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Condolences for the victims were expressed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who praised the swift action of emergency responders, as well as Queen Camilla, King Charles III, Jagmeet Singh (leader of the New Democratic Party), David Eby (leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party), and Pierre Poilievre (leader of Canada’s Conservative Party). Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim also expressed sadness over the incident and offered support to those affected.

The Liberal Party has paused campaign events ahead of the national election due to the tragedy. No new information about the victims or their families was given, and no new political party events were affected by the incident.

The Lapu Lapu festival serves not only to honor Filipino history and culture but also to highlight the values of "bayanihan" (community spirit and cooperation) and "kapwa" (shared humanity), which are deeply rooted in Filipino culture and contribute to the wider cultural fabric of British Columbia. The festival provides a space for Filipino Canadians to celebrate their identity, contributions, and resilience, particularly after events such as this tragic vehicle-ramming attack.

The tragedy brought increased attention to the festival and Filipino Heritage Month, as government leaders expressed solidarity and emphasized inclusivity and support for the Filipino community in British Columbia. The incident was not an act of terrorism, according to authorities.

This attack, the deadliest in Vancouver's history, became a pivotal moment underscoring both the significance of the festival and the strength of the Filipino community's unity and healing efforts in the face of adversity. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of community events in celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity.
