"Multiple deaths and injuries ensue following an assault on a UN humanitarian relief convoy in Sudan"

In a chilling turn of events, a humanitarian convoy was brutally attacked in the North Darfur region of Sudan on June 2, 2025. The assault, which took place in Al Koma, claimed the lives of five aid workers.

The World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF confirmed the tragedy in a joint statement, describing the attack as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law. The convoy, comprising 15 trucks, had covered 1,120 miles from Port Sudan before the gruesome incident.

Drowning direly needed supplies, the targeted convoy was trying to negotiate access to El Fasher when it was struck. The attack has been described as a devastating setback for vulnerable children and families who depended on the supplies.

The two-year war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces has made aid deliveries a dangerous endeavor, leaving more than half the population of Sudan facing acute levels of hunger. Last week, WFP premises in El Fasher were targeted, resulting in the loss of several medics.

The joint WFP-UNICEF statement pointed out that the convoy's route was shared in advance with parties on the ground. Under international humanitarian law, aid convoys should be protected, and parties should allow and facilitate their swift, unimpeded passage. The agencies pleaded for an end to attacks on humanitarian personnel, facilities, and vehicles.

The agencies, including the IOM and the World Council of Churches, have strongly condemned the attack. The UN Human Rights Office has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in the region[1]. The incident underscores the dire need for the protection of aid workers, ensuring safety in humanitarian operations, and adherence to international humanitarian law.

Politics and general news are filled with reports of the ongoing war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces, with the latest incident being the brutal attack on a humanitarian convoy in the North Darfur region of Sudan. This attack, part of the broader war-and-conflicts, claimed the lives of five aid workers and served as a devastating setback for vulnerable children and families who depended on the supplies being transported by the convoy.
