Murley Appears Optimistic Despite Loss: Scoreless Draw Against Bochum Irrelevant - Müller regains form: Draw against Bochum (0-0)
In a rollercoaster of emotions, the distress over goalkeeper Kevin Müller's health has started to subside for the members and athletes of 1. FC Heidenheim. Müller, aged 34, is reporting significant improvements, as Holger Sanwald, the board chairman, revealed in the ZDF sports studio. "We're hopeful that he'll rejoin us soon. He's already inquiring about when he can step onto the pitch again."
During the 0:0 draw, Müller collided severely with Bochum attacker Ibrahima Sissoko and fell unconscious on the field. Later that evening, an evaluation revealed that Müller had sustained a concussion, the club announced the following day. However, the length of his recovery remains unclear.
The nerve-wracking relegation battle in the Bundesliga and preserving the four-point advantage over rival Bochum took a backseat after the stalemate.
Much-needed respite
The positive health updates from the Heidenheim leadership can be seen as cautiously optimistic - especially since coach Schmidt also stated to SWR the day after the alarming incident: "He's already radiating again."
The initial sight of paramedics rushing onto the field, the surprised hush in the stadium, and the screen raised during treatment immediately suggested something catastrophic had happened. "Health is our top priority. Everything else is a side issue," said Mainka.
Both sets of fans repeatedly chanted "Kevin Müller" in solidarity. After over ten minutes of apprehension, Müller was carried off on a stretcher and taken to the Heidenheim clinic. "You can't just shake off such an incident," described Mainka the minutes following the restart. "We stated to ourselves that we're doing this for Mü, that we're fighting for Mü - that's what he'd expect from us, that we keep going until the very end. Regrettably, we couldn't give him the win."
Who gains more from the point?
Defender Mainka believes the point "likely benefits us more than Bochum." The Heidenheimers have met their minimum objective, confirmed Marnon Busch: "We kept Bochum at bay."
The gap to VfL remains four points before the games on Saturday (3:15 PM/Sky) against Union Berlin and May 17 against Werder Bremen. "We wanted this point, we have it in our own hands - regardless of what happens elsewhere this weekend," said Schmidt, who set the relegation playoff place as the target for FCH months ago.
Apart from Müller, Sirlord Conteh and Leonardo Scienza also look set to sit out due to injuries. They were also subbed early against Bochum. Müller's stand-in, Frank Feller, however, handled his duties competently, and Schmidt has given him playing time in the Conference League and the DFB-Pokal this season. "He demonstrated that we can rely on him," said the coach.
