Thomas Müller Officially Joins Vancouver Whitecaps

Thomas Müller, the 35-year-old legend from FC Bayern Munich, has been officially introduced as the new football star of Vancouver Whitecaps in Vancouver, Canada. The Whitecaps, under the management of Axel Schuster, are in the semifinals of the Canadian Championship and aiming to become Canadian champions for the fourth year in a row.

Müller's arrival at the Whitecaps is a major statement by the club, with the team and ownership expecting him to boost team morale and impact results positively, both on and off the field. The former national player will be wearing the number 13 on his back, a number he wore with the national team.

Strategically, Müller is anticipated to operate primarily in an attacking midfield role, creating chances and exploiting space, consistent with his playing style developed over a highly successful career at FC Bayern Munich. His key qualities include chance creation, exceptional spatial awareness, and relentless off-the-ball movement.

Müller's first MLS start on August 24, 2025, saw him given the captain’s armband, signaling his leadership role immediately. He scored a crucial late penalty to secure a 3-2 comeback victory over St. Louis City SC, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure and contribute decisively on the pitch.

Müller and coach Jesper Sørensen have a strong rapport, with Müller giving Sørensen a powerful shoulder massage on stage during the press conference. During the event, Müller received an eagle feather and a handmade headband from the Squamish tribe, symbolising his welcome to the local community.

Axel Schuster believes that the city, the team, and the fans deserve the biggest transfer in their history and the attention that comes with it. Müller, for his part, has expressed confidence about feeling at home in Vancouver quickly, citing his curiosity and love for people. He has always managed to adapt quickly to his surroundings throughout his career.

Müller's focus is on football and not the attention that comes with the transfer. He has mentioned that he knows how to vacuum and clean an apartment, showing his down-to-earth personality. The German-run catering company in Vancouver ensures that Müller has access to real liverwurst, satisfying his culinary preferences.

Müller is known for his ability to entertain in English, cracking jokes and offering life wisdom. During his press conference, he joked about transitioning from playing football to playing soccer. At the airport, he was greeted by a delegation from the Musqueam tribe with a traditional drum march, further cementing his connection with the local community.

The Whitecaps are currently second in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer and on track for the playoffs. Müller's goal is to help the team win titles, not just this year but also next year. With Müller's world-class experience and leadership, the Whitecaps are poised to elevate their attacking creativity and overall competitive edge in MLS.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment, focusing on reducing the carbon footprint from sports facilities, such as Vancouver Whitecaps' stadium, to promote a greener and more sustainable sports industry.

Thomas Müller, during his first pre-match press conference, confidently declared that he would not only bring his football skills to the Vancouver Whitecaps but also his expertise in sports-analysis, aiming to help the team improve their performance both on and off the field.
