Mukul Rohatgi: Former Attorney General and Lawyer Who Defended Amitabh Shah Rukh Khan in a Legal Tussle
Mukul Rohatgi, one of India's most respected legal minds, was born on August 17, 1955. His legal career began with a Commerce (Honours) degree from Delhi University in 1975, followed by an LL.B. from Bombay University in 1978.
In 1994, Rohatgi was designated a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court, marking the start of his ascent in the legal world. This was followed by his appointment as the Additional Solicitor General of India in 1999.
Rohatgi's career reached new heights in 2014 when he was appointed the 14th Attorney General for India, a position he held until 2017. During his tenure, he was involved in several landmark cases, including striking down triple talaq as unconstitutional and arguing in the Aadhaar privacy and validity hearings.
Rohatgi has represented a diverse range of clients, from high-profile politicians and corporate giants to film personalities and public officials. His list of notable clients includes Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's son, Aryan Khan, whom he represented in the 2021 drugs-on-cruise case. He has also defended late J. Jayalalithaa, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and Hemant Soren, former Jharkhand Chief Minister, in various legal matters.
Rohatgi's expertise has earned him international recognition. He has presented papers at conferences such as the Indo-British Legal Forum in Scotland (2006), the Indo-Australian Legal Forum in Canberra (2015), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Prosecutors General meeting in Kazakhstan (2015).
In addition to his legal work, Rohatgi has attended international conferences such as the International Bar Association meetings and ICC conferences, where he addressed topics including arbitration, constitutional law, and international trade law.
Rohatgi's contributions to the legal field have not gone unnoticed. He has received various awards and recognitions, including the National Law Day Award (2008), Doctorate in Laws by Fakir Mohan University, Odisha (2011), and LL.D. (Honoris Causa) by Amity University, Uttar Pradesh (2016). He was also featured in Legal Eagles (2015) and named among "India's Top 10 Lawyers" by The Times of India in 2010.
Recently, Rohatgi has been in the limelight for defending Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. He has also represented Facebook and WhatsApp in key constitutional matters.
With a career spanning over four decades, Mukul Rohatgi continues to be one of India's most prominent legal luminaries, handling high-stakes litigation across various legal fields with grace and expertise.
