Muhyiddin admits no support for subsidies aimed at non-locals

In a recent Facebook video, Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin addressed claims made by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding his stance on subsidies and foreigners. The video, devoid of advertisements or promotions, served as a clarification of Muhyiddin's stance on the matter.

Contrary to Anwar's claims in the Dewan Rakyat, Muhyiddin did not question the government for burdening foreigners who have made significant contributions to the country. He also denied making a statement about subsidies being intended for foreigners, a claim that has been attributed to him by Anwar.

The video did not provide any new information about foreigners or their contributions to the country, nor did it address the source or authenticity of the statement attributed to Muhyiddin by Anwar. Instead, Muhyiddin requested information on where Anwar heard or read the purported statement, implying that it did not occur.

In the video, Muhyiddin questioned the source of Anwar's allegation, suggesting there is no evidence to support it. This prompted Prime Minister Anwar to order the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate the origin of the alleged claim and Muhyiddin’s denial. The MCMC contacted Muhyiddin to record his statement for the investigation, clarifying that the probe is to verify facts and not to accuse him.

The original source of the alleged statement remains unclear, as it appears to have been reported secondhand by Anwar himself during a parliamentary speech. However, Muhyiddin denies ever making the statement, stating no genuine or authentic source exists for the claim.

Muhyiddin clarified that the government's decision on targeted subsidies for electricity and RON95 petrol is aimed at continuing to help Malaysians while reducing the nation's fiscal deficit. He emphasised that his fundamental policy on subsidies is that they are meant for Malaysians.

In summary, Muhyiddin has denied ever publicly admitting to or making a statement about burdening foreigners with subsidies. A formal investigation has been initiated by government authorities to clarify the matter based on Anwar’s parliamentary remarks. The video posted by Muhyiddin on Facebook serves as a denial of the controversial statement attributed to him.
