Too Many Errors: Melsungen Suffers First European Cup Defeat - MT Melsungen's unbeaten streak ends with a 37–33 loss to Vardar Skopje
MT Melsungen suffered their first watch of the European League season on Sunday, falling 37–33 to Vardar Skopje. The loss ended their hopes of securing an early quarterfinal spot. Despite the setback, the German side remains top of their main round group with six wins from eight matches.
The match began with a dominant display from Melsungen. They raced to a 10–4 lead after just 13 minutes, with top scorer Reynir Þór Stefánsson netting twelve goals overall. But Vardar Skopje fought back strongly, surging ahead in the final five minutes of the first half to take a narrow lead into the break.
The second half was fast and closely contested. However, Melsungen struggled with unforced errors and costly time penalties in the decisive moments. Vardar Skopje capitalised, pulling away late to secure the win.
Melsungen's depleted roster played a part in the defeat. Ten players, including key figures like Nebojša Simić and Olle Forsell Schefvert, were unavailable. Assistant coach Isaías Villaplana Guardiola even stepped in to fill the gaps.
Vardar Skopje entered the game in strong form, having won eight of their last ten matches. Their home record this season includes victories over MRK Sesvete and Fenix Toulouse. This win keeps them competitive in Group III, though they still trail Melsungen, who sit on six points. A rematch between the two sides is scheduled for March 10 in Skopje.
The defeat leaves Melsungen at the top of their group but delays their progress to the quarterfinals. Their next challenge will be recovering from injuries and errors before the return fixture. Vardar Skopje, meanwhile, continue their push for a top-two finish in the main round.
